Gingerbread House Day, December 12th is great day to spend with family and friends creating special holiday memories.
Although there’s no verified information to know exactly when the celebration of Gingerbread House Day began, it’s clear that the craft of creating custom gingerbread houses goes back to the 16th Century. Food sculptures were often used to dress up a dinner table as a centerpiece, and then the edible design became dessert shared by guests. Gingerbread Houses were thought to have gained popularity after the publication of the Brothers Grimm fairly tale “Hansel and Gretel”, and are still a staple during the Christmas holiday season today.
The largest and most elaborate gingerbread house was constructed last year (2014) in Texas by the Traditions Club of Bryan. When completed, the house set a new world record; standing over twenty (20) feet tall and forty-two (42) feet wide, and used over twenty-two thousand (22,000+) pieces of candy-embellishment. This year in Orlando Florida, the Grand Floridian Resort in Disney World revealed their life-size gingerbread house for display.
Now, obviously your holiday creations don’t have to be so elaborate, but you can still make something special to share with family and friends. There are a number of simple kits you can purchase online or in stores such as Williams-Sonoma, Kmart, and Sam’s Club ranging in price from $5 to $200 (on average). Or, if you prefer to make your own design from scratch there are number of great resources online with recipes, step-by-step instructions, templates or even video instructions to show you how to design your own holiday memories.
